Patients with cleft lip and palate have discontinuity in the teeth bearing segment called the alveolar ridge. These patients have missing teeth and malposed teeth due to lack of co-ordinated growth. This causes inability to create dentoalveolar sounds and these teeth interfere with the positioning of the tongue which also causes difficulty while chewing, speech and other oral function. A cleft orthodontist is a specialized in treating such abnormalities by aligning the teeth in the discontinues alveolar ridge, hence restoring the normal function. The time duration for the orthodontic correction depends upon the severity of the condition.
