The term orthognathic comes from the Greek words “orthos” meaning straighten and “gnathic” meaning of or related to the jaw. Hence the term orthognathic, meaning “straighten the jaw.” Orthognathic surgery is performed to correct a wide range of minor and major skeletal and dental irregularities, including the misalignment of jaws and teeth.
