How To Restore Your Face Back To Normal After An Accident

Road traffic accidents are far more prevalent now than they were a few years ago. Accident survivors often find it traumatic to look at themselves before the mirror; it’s almost like looking at a new person! From minor tooth loss to death, there can be a wide range of effects after an accident. In some cases, doctors may save the patient’s life, but the accident could leave permanent scars on his/her life. At the Richardsons Hospital, we aim to restore normalcy using  facial correction surgery.

What Happens In A Restorative Surgery?

The facial bones are categorized to include frontal (forehead) bones, orbital (eye socket) bones, nasal (nose) bones, zygomatic (cheek) bones, a maxilla (upper jaw)and mandible(lower jaw). A fracture of nasal bones is very common during accidents.

Since the muscles of the face are attached to these bones, a  fracture  not only affects the bones but also  the function of muscles attached to them.

How Do We Help?

At the Richardsons Dental and Craniofacial Hospital, we aim to restore the patient’s face back to its old glory, both in terms of function and aesthetics.

At the Richardsons Dental and Craniofacial Hospital, we also provide all forms of post-trauma facial corrective procedures, including:

  • Fractured facial bones
  • Jaw asymmetry resulted from fracture
  • Lacerations
  • Post-traumatic scar revision
  • Dental rehabilitation

Fractured Facial Bones:

In this procedure, we reduce the fractured segments of a bone and approximate it  to the maximum fit  using titanium plates and screws. Physicians then perform a Fixation under general anesthesia.

Lacerations:

We cut open wounds and suture lacerations with care to avoid  post operative scarring.  In case of loss of soft tissue, we elevate and suture the  flap.

Post-traumatic Scar Revision:

As the wound heals, a scar is generally formed; we remove this hypertrophied tissue surgically under local anesthesia.

Internal Maxillary Fixation:

We then do an IMF to stabilize fractured segments in place with the help of occlusion. Physicians then fix the arch bars intraorally.

Dental Rehabilitation:

A tooth with trauma needs special care. If the damage is severe with no possible way to restore, we suggest extraction followed by replacement with a bridge or implant. Replacement is important to rehabilitate the facial profile. We do this using facial correction surgery, speech, and phonetics, thereby helping the patient chew, smile, etc. If the tooth can be restored, it has to undergo root canal treatment to avoid complications and infections on later dates.

Dr. Sunil Richardson, Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon with his team, provides quality and successful treatment for post traumatic management and performs cranio facial surgeries.
