Cleft lip repair..
About cleft lip palate
Cleft lip and palate is the most common congenital deformity occurring in almost one in 700 people. When a baby is born with a cleft lip /or palate it is very distressing for the parents as it a psychological set back. There are problems associated with feeding, swallowing, speech, ear infections etc. However cleft lip and palate can be corrected if shown to a specialist doctor at the right time, and the patients are able to lead a normal healthy lifestyle if treated adequately. Here at Richardsons Dental and Craniofacial Centre, we start with treatment of the cleft lip at infancy when the baby attains at least 5kg of weight. A team of doctors including a paediatric anesthesiologist is kept on board for the surgery.
Here is a case of a five-month-old baby who weighed approximately 5.8kgs and had a right side complete cleft lip and palate. Dr.Sunil Richardson decided to repair her cleft lip as she was of adequate weight and also healthy otherwise. The baby was kept fasting for about four hours. The procedure done for her was the modified Millard’s lip repair. The OT was completed in less than an hour and the baby recovered uneventfully. It has been three days and she has already recovered almost fully, is her playful self and is now ready to go home.
When to do cleft lip treatment?
Treatment of the cleft lip should be done at the right age to prevent excessive scarring and also to restore function. The technique of treatment is also very crucial to the overall outcome of the surgery.
