Hair grows for a period of time, usually 2 to 6 years, and then the follicles shed the hair and go into a rest stage for approximately 3 months, then a new hair growth cycle begins. It is normal to lose between 50 to 150 hairs per day from normal shedding.

What is Patchy Hair Loss?

Alopecia areata is an immune system disorder, which causes hair follicles to stop producing hairs. Sudden loss of hair from small patches on the head is a common symptom. Advanced forms of the disorder include alopeciatotalis, where all hair on the head is lost, and alopeciauniversalis, which results in the absence of all body hair.

How can we prevent hair loss?

Maintaining good scalp hygiene (Frequent cleaning of hair) is a basic measure to prevent hair loss. The underlying problems should be corrected in case of hormonal irregularities or nutritional imbalances. In case of patchy hair loss i.e alopecia areata, the cause is mainly autoimmune. In these cases, steroid lotions or injections are given into the area of hair loss. These drugs stimulate hair growth again from the follicles. In patients with male pattern baldness (Pattern hair loss) hair, fall cannot be completely prevented because it is inherited or has a genetic trait. But the hair loss in these pattern hair loss patients can also be treated.

How effective are these medications for the treatment of hair loss?

Minoxidil is topically applied medication, it stimulates the hair follicles to grow and it is directly applied to the scalp. It slows hair loss and some men experience the growth of new hair. However, hair loss usually returns if the medication is stopped. Finasteride is an orally taken medication that inhibits the production of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone. Multivitamin medication along with antioxidants help in augmenting the immune system to prevent further hair loss.

Serious side effects are rare and occur only if too much of the medication has absorbed by the body. They include blurred vision, chest pain, dizziness, fainting and irregular heartbeat.

Side effects associated with finasteride include chills; cold sweats; confusion; dizziness, swelling in the legs, arms, and face; tingling; erectile dysfunction; decreased libido; and ejaculatory dysfunction; and weight gain.

How does laser therapy help in hair growth?

Low-level laser therapy works by stimulating the minute blood vessels of the scalp, thus improving circulation and blood flow to the hair roots. The increased blood flow helps in stimulating the follicles to grow new hair.
