Orthognathic surgery is usually done to straighten the teeth or to reduce the discrepancy between the jaws. Ideally, our upper jaw and lower jaw should fit like a jigsaw puzzle if not there would change in our facial appearance and this leads to high levels of psychological distress, affecting interpersonal relationships, confidence, and quality of life. Additionally, this may lead to speech difficulties too. Orthognathic Surgery can improve the overall facial profile.
One such female patient who had a misalignment of her jaws approached Richardsons Dental and Craniofacial Hospital. She was in her early twenties who was accompanied by her parents. She was extremely conscious of her appearance that she wanted surgery to align her jaws. Upon investigation, it was found that she had an upper jaw deformity. Dr. Sunil Richardson operated on the upper jaw enabling the whole upper jaw, along with the roof of the mouth and upper teeth, to move as one unit. This enabled the patient to acquire her desired look.
Surgeries of this kind are usually preferred for cosmetic reasons. Our patient was delighted with the results achieved and her parents, who were skeptical about the whole procedure, in the beginning, were extremely pleased to see their daughter satisfied. “We are thankful to Dr. Sunil Richardson who has made our daughter confident about her appearance. He has done a first-class job!” were her mother’s exact words.
Now after the surgery done the patient was called for the first review after a month and the swelling post-surgery receded and the desired results were achieved.
