Dental Implants a Boon for Tooth Replacement
Dental implant Treatment is artificial tooth replacements. Implants are screws resembling the root of a natural tooth and an abutment with the crown represents the crown of a natural tooth. Patient selection for Implants:
Young and healthy patients
Patients with sufficient bone density.
Chronic smokers and patients with uncontrolled diabetes are most likely not suitable as the success rate of dental implant treatment in these patients are less, because of poor oral hygiene and reduced healing.
Procedure:

Clinical examination:
Wherein the patient needs, oral health status, general health status, prognosis of implants are evaluated.
Radiographic examination:
Orthopantomogram(OPG) is advised to visualize the density and the amount of bone available for dental implants. At times a CBCT may be requested.
Intraoral procedure:
Oral prophylaxis advised depending on the patient need. Extractions can be performed if required. Extractions and implants placement can be done at the same appointment.
Implants are placed under local anesthesia. Incisions are made under proper asepsis. Bone is drilled to create space for the implant. Implants are then threaded into space. Healing cap placed and sutures given.
The patient is put under antibiotics.
Osseointegration takes around 4 weeks to 8 weeks to complete. Once the stability of the implant is achieved and confirmed through a radiograph. With successful osseointegration implants are ready to be load with an abutment.
The incision is made to reveal the healing cap screw. After removal of the cap, screw abutment is fixed. Depending on the incision sutures can be placed. After a weeks time impression are made for the fabrication of the final tooth or crown. Finally, the tooth can be crowned over the implant or abutment.
The success rate of titanium implants is 98% which primarily depends on the oral hygiene maintenance by the patients. Surgeon’s skill and healthy bones.
