Mouth and Lip correction surgery
A patient named Prita ( name changed ) recently visited Richardsons Dental and Craniofacial Hospital requesting us for mouth and lip correction surgery. The scar was located at the junction of the upper and the lower lips, called as the commissure. She had already had a few surgeries done to try and correct the defect but the improvement was not significant.
When we asked her how she got this kind of a scar she said it was for an old childhood injury due to a dog bite many years ago….
Apart from not being able to close her mouth shut properly, the deformity was affecting her self-confidence.
It has been estimated by WHO that injuries due to dog bites are as common as 17 in every 1000 people in the world It is more prevalent in males than in females and this is seen in younger males more because they are out of their houses longer for earning purposes and hence more chances of getting exposed to stray dogs.
