This dialogue from The Dark Knight still gives me goosebumps. Joker and his scar-ridden smile are more of the terrifying things ever. We till today don’t know how he got those scars or which story is true! All I remember is how when we see the joker all we can see are his obnoxious scars! Even though those scars made The Joker one the most sort after villains, having scars in real life can be a nightmare!
Our patient Mr. Subin walked into our hospital a few days ago, he had a nasty scar running across the right side of his face in a linear fashion. He wanted to get rid of this scar and approached Dr. Sunil Richardson for the same. We asked him the story of his scars and it turned out to be less spooky than expected. He had been in a road traffic accident 7 years back which resulted in facial lacerations and multiple facial bone fractures. He has had this scar for 6 years now. He wanted to get rid of these scars and so he approached us here at Richardsons dental and craniofacial hospital. We conducted our usual presurgical workup, after which we decided to do a scar excision for Subin. The scar was excised and sutured back as per the Resting skin tension lines. The entire procedure took around 1 hour. The most challenging things about such cases where the scar is very wide, the goal is to achieve closure as esthetically as possible, more so because it is present on the face.
We achieved an esthetic closure and the patient was discharged from care in a few hours post-surgery, after which he resumed his normal routine. He visited us a few weeks later for the follows up visit. He was very happy with his new look and so were we. Many facial scar patients visit our hospital to seek treatment. The scars being present of the face, make the surgery all the more challenging. Fine and intricate work is required. But all we have to say to patients like Subin is ‘Why so serious? Lets put a smile on that face!’
