4 Things You Must Know About Mandibular Distraction Surgery in India

Besides cosmetic issues like flat cheekbones, a recessed jaw can cause dental problems, speech issues, and obstructed breathing. A jaw or mandibular distraction procedure helps lengthen a small or recessed jaw.

What is Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis Surgery?

Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis or MDO is performed on infants diagnosed with Pierre Robin sequence, a condition where the jaw is small (micrognathia), and the tongue falls back into the throat (glossoptosis), followed by breathing troubles. Typically, babies with Pierre Robin sequence have cleft palate too. Mandibular distraction osteogenesis surgery lengthens the jaw to open up the airway so the baby can breathe safely, easily, and comfortably.

The procedure involves administering general anesthesia and then making a small incision under the jaw on both sides of the neck. The front and back of the jaw are separated by cutting the lower jaw or the mandibular bone on both sides and placing distractors temporarily to keep it in place. The distractors attached to the front and back sections of the bone will help slowly move the lower jaw forward, allowing new bone to form. The activation arms on the distractors are usually turned for about three weeks until the lower jaw lengthens enough to provide more space for air to pass. This technique of lengthening the jaw and widening the space allows the tongue to be pulled forward and improve its position. Once the jaw is moved forward, the distractors will remain in place for about 3-4 months until the new bones heal properly. After 3-4 months, they’ll be removed through the same incisions used when they were placed.
