Cavernous Hemangioma of the lip
An anxious couple with their gracious little girl of 5 years old approached Dr Sunil at Richardsons dental and craniofacial hospital, Nagercoil. The swelling was quite large and interfering her cute smile and function. The swelling was found in the right side of her upper lip involving lower lip, extending to her upper cheek. The swelling was reddish-purple in colour. On examining Dr Sunil Richardson concluded it to be a hemangioma growth on the skin and surgical excision to be the solution.
Hemangioma is non-cancerous growth on or under the superficial skin with extra or numerous blood vessels. They are usually present from birth. Their exact cause of occurrence is not known. They can be of familial origin too. They are bright red to purple in colour depending on the depth of the swelling under the skin. Hemangioma on skin presents no discomfort or pain. Complication as far as haemangioma is massive bleeding with rupture of swelling.
The little kid was prepared for the surgery under general anaesthesia after routine blood investigations. The surgery went successful as planned. The entire mass of swelling was excised completely to prevent reoccurrence. Excised tissue was sent to a laboratory for further investigation, and was confirmed to be a hemangioma. Little lady’s recovery was very good. She was happy to see her face free of swelling replaced with few sutures, which would be removed after 7 days. After a month this pretty little girl reported back for review with even more vibrant smile. Her parents were delighted and happy to see their daughter.
